Payload vs. towing capacity
Payload limits what the tow vehicle carries; towing capacity limits trailer weight under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. A trailer can be below the advertised tow rating while its tongue or pin load pushes the vehicle beyond payload.
How to read a tow vehicle door sticker
Open the driver door and locate the Tire and Loading Information label and certification label. Photograph both, then record the vehicle-specific occupant-and-cargo capacity, GVWR and front and rear GAWR exactly as printed.
GVWR, GCWR and GAWR explained
GVWR applies to one loaded vehicle, GCWR to the loaded tow vehicle and trailer combination, and GAWR to one axle system. Passing any one check does not imply passing the others.
How to weigh a towing setup
Load the vehicle and trailer exactly as traveled, position each axle group on the appropriate scale platform, and record the ticket and connection condition. A second tow-vehicle-only pass can support hitch-load and trailer-weight calculations when nothing inside the vehicle changes.
Dry weight vs. loaded trailer weight
Dry or unloaded weight is rarely the weight actually towed. The travel-ready number may add factory options not included in the published figure, batteries, propane, water, food, tools, clothing and recreational cargo.
Tongue weight explained
Tongue weight is the downward trailer load carried at a conventional hitch. It consumes tow-vehicle payload and receiver capacity and can change materially when cargo, tanks or accessories move.
What a weight-distribution hitch changes
A weight-distribution hitch uses spring bars to alter how hitch-applied load is distributed across tow-vehicle and trailer axles. It does not create payload or increase vehicle, axle, tire, receiver or trailer ratings.
Fifth-wheel pin weight and truck payload
A fifth wheel transfers a substantial part of its loaded weight into the truck bed through the hitch. That pin load, the hitch itself, passengers and truck cargo all consume the same vehicle payload.
How tire load capacity fits into towing
Tire capacity is a separate component limit. Compare the measured load supported by an axle with the documented capacity of the exact tires at the applicable pressure, while also checking GAWR and wheel limits.
How to check payload before buying a trailer
Start with the exact tow vehicle’s payload label, reserve room for people and existing equipment, add hitch hardware, then estimate loaded—not dry—tongue or pin weight. The payload remainder determines whether the shopping scenario deserves further evaluation.
How to read a truck scale ticket
A typical three-platform ticket reports steer axle, drive axle, trailer axle group and gross weight. Match each line to the axle position used during the pass and record whether the trailer was connected and whether weight distribution was engaged.
How RV water changes payload

Working Load Limit vs. Breaking Strength
Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum weight a securement component is rated to support in everyday service. Breaking strength is the force required to break the component under test conditions, typically 3 to 4 times the WLL.
How to read a ratchet strap label
A compliant securement strap must have a legible label or stencil specifying its manufacturer and its Working Load Limit (WLL). If the label is missing, illegible, or does not specify the WLL, the strap is treated as having zero rated capacity.
Loading and securing an ATV/UTV for transport
To safely transport an ATV or UTV, load the machine centered on the trailer to maintain a 10% to 15% tongue weight. Secure it with at least four rated straps or chains attached to the machine's frame, never to suspension arms, axles, or steering linkage.
