Best tongue weight scales for repeatable setup checks

A tongue weight scale is useful when it makes repeat measurements easier—not when it replaces a certified public scale or the ratings on your vehicle and hitch.

Three distinct fits, not a universal winner

Choose the operating pattern that resembles your setup, then verify every capacity and compatibility constraint.

01

Best for Simple, established hydraulic measurement

Sherline LM-2000

The compact reference choice when a 2,000 lb dial range fits your expected tongue weight and you can reproduce the same measurement geometry each time.

Capacity
2,000 lb
Reading
Analog dial

Important limit: Dial resolution is coarser than a digital scale, and the manual describes reduced accuracy near the ends of the gauge range.

02

Best for Adjustable coupler-height setups

Big Truck Big RV Adjustable 2,000-lb Scale

A practical analog option when the adjustable support helps keep the trailer level without building a separate stack of blocking.

Capacity
2,000 lb
Reading
50-lb increments

Important limit: The reviewed listing specifies 50-lb increments and a 3% margin, so it is better for setup checks than fine-grained diagnostics.

03

Best for Higher capacity and finer displayed increments

B&W Digital Tongue Weight Scale

The strongest fit here for users who want a high-capacity digital reading and an adjustable stand in one case.

Capacity
4,000 lb
Reading
5-lb increments

Important limit: It uses a 9V battery and costs more than a compact hydraulic puck; it is described for bumper-pull couplers, not fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight.

03 · How we evaluated

The criteria behind the short list

We favour documented constraints and reproducible setup over feature count. These pages do not represent hands-on laboratory testing unless explicitly stated.

  1. 01

Capacity with useful headroom above the calculated target—not merely the largest number on the box.

  2. 02

A setup method that can hold the loaded trailer level and keep the coupler support vertical.

  3. 03

Resolution and published accuracy appropriate to the decision being made.

  4. 04

Clear documentation, fit limitations, power needs, storage, and warranty terms.

04 · Product notes

Where each option fits—and where it does not

Each recommendation is conditional. The “avoid when” note matters as much as the feature list.

Pick 1 · Simple, established hydraulic measurement

Sherline LM-2000

The compact reference choice when a 2,000 lb dial range fits your expected tongue weight and you can reproduce the same measurement geometry each time.

Why it fits

Its direct hydraulic mechanism needs no batteries, and Sherline publishes both operating instructions and gauge-accuracy limits.

Strengths

  • No battery or app
  • Published accuracy limits and operating method
  • Compact enough to keep with trailer tools

Tradeoffs

  • Reading depends on careful, repeatable setup
  • Not legal-for-trade equipment
Compatibility check
Use beneath a supported bumper-pull coupler or through a correctly arranged pipe/board setup described by the manufacturer.
Avoid when
Your expected tongue weight is close to 2,000 lb, you need a trade-certified reading, or the trailer cannot be held level and stable during measurement.
Published limitation
Dial resolution is coarser than a digital scale, and the manual describes reduced accuracy near the ends of the gauge range.
Warranty record
One year in the reviewed manufacturer booklet.

Pick 2 · Adjustable coupler-height setups

Big Truck Big RV Adjustable 2,000-lb Scale

A practical analog option when the adjustable support helps keep the trailer level without building a separate stack of blocking.

Why it fits

The integrated height adjustment addresses a common measurement error: changing the trailer attitude while placing the scale.

Strengths

  • Height adjustment can simplify level setup
  • Self-contained ball support
  • Hard mechanical format

Tradeoffs

  • Coarse increments
  • Retailer-documented specifications rather than a reviewed factory manual
Compatibility check
Confirm the coupler can bear squarely on the supplied ball and that the stated height range matches the loaded trailer attitude.
Avoid when
You need five-pound resolution, independent calibration documentation, or a capacity above 2,000 lb.
Published limitation
The reviewed listing specifies 50-lb increments and a 3% margin, so it is better for setup checks than fine-grained diagnostics.
Warranty record
Limited lifetime warranty in the reviewed retailer listing.

Digital adjustable stand

Pick 3 · Higher capacity and finer displayed increments

B&W Digital Tongue Weight Scale

The strongest fit here for users who want a high-capacity digital reading and an adjustable stand in one case.

Why it fits

The reviewed listing combines a 4,000-lb maximum, five-pound display increments, and an adjustable 19.5–27 inch setup range.

Strengths

  • Highest capacity in this comparison
  • Fine displayed increments
  • Adjustable stand and case

Tradeoffs

  • Battery-dependent
  • Not intended for fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight
Compatibility check
Bumper-pull trailers with a coupler height inside the adjustable range and expected load comfortably below the scale maximum.
Avoid when
You are measuring fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight, or a simpler analog check is sufficient.
Published limitation
It uses a 9V battery and costs more than a compact hydraulic puck; it is described for bumper-pull couplers, not fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight.
Warranty record
Limited lifetime warranty in the reviewed retailer listing.

Decision tool

Which scale format fits your process?

Choose the answers closest to your actual measurement routine.

01What matters most?
02What range must the tool cover?

05 · Selection method

How to make the final choice

A product page tells you what a component can do. Your measured setup determines whether it belongs in the system.

01

Measure the loaded configuration

Water, propane, batteries, cargo, and load placement can all change tongue weight. Measure the configuration you intend to tow, then repeat after material loading changes.

02

Control the geometry

Support the trailer securely, follow the scale maker’s placement instructions, and keep the trailer at its normal towing attitude. A precise display cannot correct a poor setup.

03

Use a public scale for the whole system

A tongue scale answers one question. Certified axle weights are still needed to evaluate truck, trailer, hitch, and axle ratings together.

Safety boundary

Before you install or operate

  • Never work beneath or place hands or feet under an unsupported coupler.
  • Use wheel chocks and stable, rated supports on firm, level ground.
  • Do not exceed the scale, jack, coupler, hitch, vehicle, axle, or tire ratings.
  • Treat the reading as a measurement input—not a declaration that a towing combination is safe or compliant.

06 · Common questions

Questions to settle before checkout

Is a tongue weight scale as accurate as a public scale?

They answer different questions. A tongue scale is convenient for repeat setup checks; a certified public scale provides axle weights for the loaded combination. Use both when the decision depends on the full rating picture.

Should I buy a scale rated exactly at my expected tongue weight?

No. Choose a range with useful headroom and consult the maker’s accuracy guidance. A measurement near a device’s limit can be harder to trust and leaves no room for loading changes.

Can these scales measure fifth-wheel pin weight?

The products in this comparison are presented for bumper-pull tongue weight. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck pin weight normally require a suitable platform or axle-scale method.
