05 · Selection method

How to make the final choice

A product page tells you what a component can do. Your measured setup determines whether it belongs in the system.

Read the sewn label

Use the WLL marked on the complete assembly. A component or breaking-strength number is not the working rating of the strap you can use.

Trace the whole load path

Cargo attachment, webbing, ratchet, hook, trailer anchor, and the structure under that anchor form one system. The lowest-rated or poorly aligned part governs.

Plan for movement

Protect webbing from edges, keep hardware clear of tires and hot parts, secure loose tails, and recheck after the first short distance and at appropriate stops.

Safety boundary

Before you install or operate

  • Do not use a strap with a missing or unreadable rating label, cut or abraded webbing, damaged stitching, bent hardware, corrosion that affects function, or a ratchet that does not lock.
  • Do not knot webbing, join straps with hooks, load a hook on its tip or side, or let webbing bear on an unprotected sharp edge.
  • Cargo securement requirements depend on the load and jurisdiction. A calculator is a planning aid, not a regulatory determination.
  • Recheck tension and load position after initial travel and during the trip; suspension movement and cargo settling can change the system.

Questions to settle before checkout

Is breaking strength the same as working load limit?

No. Use the manufacturer-marked working load limit for planning. Breaking strength is not the allowable working load.

Can I add the WLL of every strap?

Only within a correctly designed securement method. Direction, anchor ratings, load path, and applicable rules matter; straps used in a way that does not restrain the relevant direction are not interchangeable capacity.

Are flat hooks better than S-hooks?

Neither is universal. A flat hook needs a suitable rail or edge, while an S-hook needs a compatible point and geometry that keeps it seated. Choose the fitting for the actual anchor.
