05 · Selection method

How to make the final choice

A product page tells you what a component can do. Your measured setup determines whether it belongs in the system.

Measure both heights

On level ground, measure from the top inside edge of the receiver and from the ground to the bottom of the level trailer coupler. Recheck if loading changes either ride height.

Rate the exact configuration

Do not carry the maximum number from a product family onto a smaller ball, different shank, reducer sleeve, or lower-rated receiver and coupler.

Protect clearance

Use no more drop than needed, check steep-driveway and departure clearance, and confirm the coupler, jack, chains, breakaway cable, spare tire, and tailgate can all move as intended.

Safety boundary

Before you install or operate

  • Never exceed the lowest rating in the complete towing system, regardless of the ball mount’s advertised maximum.
  • Use the manufacturer-specified pins and retainers, confirm every pin is fully engaged, and inspect for deformation, impact damage, corrosion, cracked welds, or seized adjustment parts.
  • A standard adjustable ball mount is not a weight-distribution hitch head. Follow explicit compatibility statements before adding sway-control, pintle, recovery, carrier, or flat-tow attachments.
  • Maintain ground clearance and avoid configurations that can strike pavement, curbs, trailer components, or a specialty tailgate.

Questions to settle before checkout

Can I use a reducer sleeve with an adjustable ball mount?

Only if every manufacturer permits the combination, and the sleeve, receiver, pin geometry, and reduced rating are understood. A direct-fit shank is preferable when available.

Does the largest ball always have the highest rating?

Often in these product families, but never assume. Read the rating for the exact ball, shank, and mount configuration.

Can these replace a weight-distribution hitch?

No. They are adjustable weight-carrying ball mounts. If the vehicle or trailer setup requires weight distribution, use a compatible rated system and its instructions.
